How I Designed a Bold Floral Pattern That Works in Any Room
I’ll be honest, bold pattern used to feel like a commitment I wasn’t ready to make. Then I designed this one, and something clicked. It started with an exploration of flowers and various shapes, a few dead ends, a few unexpected turns, before landing on this floral motif in magenta and plum. When pattern does the heavy lifting, everything else can breathe.
Why Magenta and Plum?
Color is always the hardest decision. Magenta sits in that sweet spot between warm and cool, energetic but not overwhelming. Paired with a deeper plum, it creates depth within the pattern itself, so even before you bring in furniture or textiles, the design already has dimension. I wanted a colorway that felt bold without reading as loud, rich without feeling heavy. Magenta and plum turned out to be exactly that balance.
Tips for Using Bold Pattern in a Room
If you’ve ever talked yourself out of a statement wallpaper or a patterned fabric, here are a few things that might change your mind.
Let it be the focal point. Bold pattern works best when the rest of the room is edited down. Neutral bedding, simple furniture shapes, and natural textures like wicker or linen give the eye a place to rest and let the pattern do its job.
Repeat the palette, don’t match it. You don’t need to pull the exact magenta into your accessories. Look for pieces that echo the undertones, warm terracottas, dusty pinks, deep greens, and the room will feel cohesive without looking overly coordinated.
Scale matters. A large repeating motif like this one works well in bigger spaces, but don’t rule it out in a smaller room. In a tight space, a bold pattern can actually make the room feel more intentional and designed rather than cramped.
One wall is enough. A single feature wall is all you need to get the full impact. It anchors the room without surrounding you in pattern, which makes it a much easier commitment than you might think.
